ABOUT ME

Ben Bregman, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, teacher, author, and philosopher exploring the intersections of integrative mental health, healthcare innovation, psychedelic policy, and biomedical ethics in his role as the lead clinician and medical director of Washington Integrative Mental Health Systems, PLLC, which he founded in 2020.  He completed his medical training at Brown University Medical School in 2003, and his residency at The George Washington University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health in 2012.  He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, at George Washington University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health and the Chair of the Substance Committee on the Maryland Taskforce for the Responsible Use of Natural Psychedelic Substances.

FOCUS AREAS

  • Dr. Bregman practices holistic, integrative psychiatry from a relational perspective and uses psychopharmacology, psychodynamic psychotherapy, plant/food-based medicine, wearable technology, pharmacogenomic testing, and psychedelic-assisted care to help people overcome obstacles to living more meaningful and eudaimonia-filled lives. He works best with individuals who come seeking care as equal partners in exploring and alleviation of the psychological, biological, and ontological factors contributing to their suffering.

  • Dr. Bregman maintains a Substack where he writes about ontology and healing, health care innovation, and consciousness.  He has also published articles on a wide range of topics including emergency psychiatry, integrative medicine in mental healthcare, and the use and mis-use of ketamine in psychiatry.  He has served as a guest lecturer and a psychiatry resident supervisor at George Washington University, guest lecturer at Maryland University of Integrative Health, and lecturer for Palo Alto University’s course of psycholytic ketamine assisted psychotherapy.  He has provided direct 1:1 supervision for ketamine assisted psychotherapy, and sits on the New Zealand Ketamine/Psychedelic Peer Review panel.

  • Dr. Bregman is the chairperson of the substances committee of the Maryland Taskforce for the Responsible Use of Natural Psychedelic Substances. In this role, he stewarded the creation of  monographs pertaining to the three natural substances (psilocybin/psilocin, DMT, and mescaline)  that Taskforce was empaneled to study which were included in the final October, 2025 report.  Through his work on the Taskforce, he has advocated for indigenous rights and protection for the plants and fungi producing psychedelic substances while also supporting their rational and safe use in mental health care.

WHAT I'M WORKING ON:

In addition to providing personalized, holistic integrative mental healthcare, I’m building partnerships with local mental health practitioners to develop an innovative healthcare ecosystem that embraces patient-led collaborative care, eudaimonia-driven clinic design, and scholarship that advances the rational use of psychedelics in mental healthcare. I’m currently working on a trauma informed harm reduction guide for practitioners and patients curious about psychedelics.
