COLLECTIVE EUDAIMONIA (BEYOND THE CLINIC)

A CLINIC DESIGNED FOR PATIENTS, PROVIDERS, AND COMMUNITIES TO FLOUISH

Beyond the clinic, our work extends into writing, policy engagement, research literacy, and strategic partnerships that contribute to the broader mental health field. We aim to share openly, cultivate meaningful collaborations, and work alongside experts to develop more thoughtful models of mental health care.

RE-IMAGINING MENTAL HEALTHCARE

What if mental healthcare were design differently?

In this four-part essay series, Dr. Ben Bregman reflects on the challenges facing today’s mental health system and explores a vision for care that is more relational, collaborative, and sustainable for both patients and providers. These essays provide the philosophical foundation for many of the ideas shaping WIMHS today.

PART 1 — THE SYSTEM IS EXHAUSTING US

Modern healthcare is placing increasing strain on both clinicians and patients, shaped by burnout, administrative burden, and systems that prioritize efficiency over human connection. What begins as a conversation with a colleague reveals a deeper structural problem — one that’s quietly reshaping what it means to give and receive care.

For many patients, the most persistent frustration isn’t just symptoms, it’s the feeling of not being truly heard. This essay explores how healing depends on a deeper, more participatory relationship between patient and clinician, one that goes beyond listening into shared understanding.

Drawing from his own clinical journey, Dr. Bregman reflects on the limitations of existing care models — from large systems to integrative settings — and the tension between depth, collaboration, and real-world constraints. These experiences begin to point toward a different way of practicing medicine.

What would a mental health clinic look like if it were truly collaborative, relational, and designed for both patient and provider growth? This essay introduces a new model of care — one that reimagines healing as a shared, evolving process rather than a transactional service.

POLICY AND ADVOCACY

Policy is one way we help shape the conditions for a safer, more connected, and more responsive mental health ecosystem.

We actively engage with emerging mental health policy, with a focus on areas like psychedelic care where clinical innovation, ethics, and regulation intersect. Our work follows and contributes to efforts such as Maryland’s Task Force on Responsible Use of Natural Psychedelic Substances, which is exploring how to create safe, equitable, and evidence-informed access through phased, data-driven policy models.

We approach policy not as an abstract domain, but as an extension of care, where thoughtful implementation, patient safety, and real-world outcomes shape how new models responsibly reach the communities they are meant to serve.

PSYCHEDLIC-ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY

What if mental healthcare were designed differently?

Our staff has been deeply engaged in psychedelic-assisted therapy during their time at Sunstone Therapies, overseeing treatment sessions, managing patient care, and contributing to the conduct of different psychedelic clinical trials, including but not limited to trials investigating:
